ST MATTHEW’S SPECIAL NEEDS
GROUP
WHO ARE WE?
St Matthew’s Special
Needs Group is a self-help group run by families with
children who have special needs in our
area. The Group exists to improve the quality of life of
our special needs children and their brothers and sisters
and also to provide a support group for parents.
WHERE DO WE LIVE?
We live in the Short Strand area of East Belfast, near the
city centre. Our group is open to all children and families
from outside the area and our outings often include them.
The Short Strand area of Belfast has a very high number of
children with special needs and the Group exists as a direct
response to their requirements.
WHAT DO WE DO?
We provide a support network for families of special needs
children. We organise a club every week for the special needs
children, their brothers and sisters, helped by their parents,
teenage helpers and a play worker. We organise outings and
seasonal celebrations. We organise a four-day break during
the summer, which is a very worthwhile community effort.
